LONDON: Former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Asif Ali Zardari said that he didn’t feel any need to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif because there was no danger to democracy.
Zardari is staying in London these days. In an interview he told a Pakistani newspaper that he completely approves of the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as the successor of PM. He said that this was similar to the beliefs of Benazir Bhutto who had always supported giving full role to women in the society. He also said that PPP had also given important positions to women during its time in the government, including the posts of Speaker, Foreign Minister and Ambassador.
Talking on the issue of extortionists he said that the Taliban leaders had asked him for extortion money which he refused. He also said that in fact transporters, businessmen and politicians all pay extortion money to Taliban but the PPP has never succumbed to such pressures. In response to a question, Zardari said that Benazir Bhutto and PM Nawaz had not been allowed to complete their tenures in the government because of some non-state actors. He said that the assailants of Benazir Bhutto were also non-state actors.
He also said that due to consistent efforts of Rangers the situation in Karachi has improved.
